About the Artist
Viktor Stognut — I paint life as I see it
My name is Viktor Stognut, and I have been painting for almost 50 years.
For me, painting has always been the art of being present — standing in front of a real landscape, watching the light change, feeling the atmosphere of a place, or setting fresh flowers in my studio and painting them exactly as they are in that moment.
I paint only from life
I do not paint from photographs or digital images. When I want to paint a landscape, I take my easel and paints and go to where my future painting is: to the mountains, to a river or a lake, to places that inspire me. I set up my easel right in the middle of nature and paint what I see in front of me.
When I paint flowers or a still life, I arrange the composition in my studio and work directly from life in the same way.
This principle lies at the heart of my work.
Every painting is a one-of-a-kind original
And since nature never repeats the same moment twice, my paintings are never repeated either.
Every work I create is a one-of-a-kind original. The landscape changes, the light fades, the flowers wilt, the still life is taken apart — and that moment no longer exists. I do not make repeats of my paintings.
There is only one original and only one owner.
My style
I work mostly in oil on canvas. My signature style is recognisable by its expressive, textured brushstrokes. Up close you can see the movement of the brush, the layers of paint and individual strokes. Step back a little — and they come together into light, space, atmosphere and mood.
Even after almost fifty years of painting, one thing still fascinates me: the chance to see a brief, unrepeatable moment of real life and keep it on canvas.
My paintings are not an attempt to make a perfect copy of nature. They are my feeling of that moment: the light, the colour, the air, the silence and the emotion of a particular place.
When you choose my painting, you are not simply buying an object for your wall. You are bringing into your home a real moment that existed only once, was painted by hand directly from life, and will never happen in exactly the same way again.
Every work shown on this website is an original painting created by my own hand.
One painting. One moment. One owner.
